PRECIOUS CARGO

On many airlines, you have two other options. The first is to fly your pet as “accompanied baggage,” in the cargo hold alongside your checked luggage. This option is only available if you are traveling on the same flight as your pet. The second choice is to transport your pet as a “live animal” cargo shipment. In the cargo system, the animal may travel unaccompanied, either through the regular cargo channels or through a specially expedited delivery service that many airlines have developed. Animals in the cargo systems are transported in the same pressurized holds as those in the checked baggage system. If you do either of these things, by all means consult with your trusted veterinarian to be sure that your dog is fit to travel. Senior dogs (over seven and a half years old) may need a more extensive health examination (that is, liver and kidney screens). Some breeds—for example, flat-nosed dogs (for example, English bull dogs and pugs)—simply do not fly well because they may have difficulty breathing even under normal conditions. You will need a health certificate in order to comply with the rules of most airlines as well as state and federal rules. To be valid for your trip on most airlines, the certificate should be issued no more than seven to ten days prior to departure.

Personally, I do not recommend flying dogs as cargo unless you have absolutely no other choice. Whenever I take Daddy or any of the other pack members to Dog Whisperer shoots in different parts of America, the dogs typically drive in the mobile home with our crew member Rojo, or we have a production assistant drive them in a car. Everybody loves traveling with Daddy. In the mornings, he always welcomes the day by bringing the person he is with a toy as an offering of friendship and simply to celebrate the start of a new adventure! Of course, driving across country involves more logistics and planning ahead than flying, but I don’t trust the unpredictable temperature conditions of cargo holds, not to mention the fact that there are no humans around to supervise.

I realize many people don’t have an option when traveling and must sometimes make the decision to fly their dogs as accompanied baggage or as cargo. If this is the case, I recommend you take the time to prepare your dog physically and psychologically for the trip. When humans become astronauts, NASA doesn’t just hire them off the street, put them in a capsule, and send them up into outer space! They prepare new astronauts years in advance, by easing them into the kind of new experiences the human body will undergo in a zero gravity environment. If I am going to put my dog on a long airline flight, I will prepare him as if I want him to become a kind of astronaut. I will start by easing him into longer periods spent in his crate. I will buy a crate with wheels
